Iron Hammer gets its legendary name from its extremely high density and heavy hand feel—solid as a small iron hammer when held, with a crisp, resonant clinking sound. It’s affectionately called Iron Hammer Sister for its delicate, shallow, smooth grain pattern and cute compact size, creating a charming contrast between toughness and elegance. Typically featuring a short squat body, small dull tip (mengan jian), rounded plump cheeks, and a stable flat lotus base with slender, neat oval air vents. The skin is a fine wax texture, light ginger-yellow or pale golden raw skin, rich in natural oils—no easy blackening, and patination starts quickly. The grain is shallow but distinct, with plump “meat bumps” and no harsh edges, making it comfortable to roll and not abrasive to hands. Patination progresses rapidly and evenly: from pale yellow to warm orange, then bright cinnabar red, and finally a translucent agate-like deep red with a jade-like luster. It is robust and not prone to splitting, suitable for both beginners and collectors; however, watch out for common flaws such as uneven skin color, small pits, and asymmetrical tip when selecting pairs. Original tree fruits from Pinggu are rare and highly sought-after, with tighter density and cleaner skin; grafted fruits are more accessible, with sizes mostly ranging from 38mm to 42mm (40mm being the most classic). It matures in mid-to-late September, with a booming market presence and strong appreciation potential for top-grade matched pairs—perfect for daily hand therapy, casual play, and premium collection.
