Limutai is a highly sought-after Horse Hoof Lion Head named after its birthplace. It’s also called Flip Seal because of its broad, flat base that resembles an ancient Chinese official seal. The iconic shape features a triangular/heart-shaped medium-high pile, neat raised shoulders, a rounded plump belly, and a stable flat bottom. Its ribs are thick and straight, with bold, well-spaced, wild yet ordered grains; the bottom grains radiate outward like lotus veins, and the air vents are mostly rhombic or oblate. The walnut boasts crystal wax skin with abundant natural oil—clean, light golden or reddish raw skin, no easy browning/blackening during patination. It has high density and heavy hand feel; the collision sound is crisp and pleasant. Patination progresses quickly and evenly: from fresh off-white/light yellow to bright orange-red, then to translucent agate red, and finally matures into a glossy, deep oxblood red with a jade-like luster. Native wild trees are scarce; grafted varieties are more common on the market, with the original Tianjin Limutai fruits having the most authentic triangular pile and oil-rich wax skin. It suits both new players who love fast-coloring, easy-maintaining walnuts and veteran collectors chasing rare native-tree pairs.
